Bangkok. Chiang Mai. Krabi. 7 nights. Under ₹50,000 all-in from India. I did it — and came back with money to spare. Here's every rupee, every baht, every decision that made it work.
Every time I post about Thailand on Instagram, the same DM floods in — "bhai itna sasta kaise?" (how is it so cheap?). The answer is simple: Thailand is one of the most budget-friendly international destinations for Indians — and most people are doing it wrong by overpaying on flights, overpriced hotels, and packaged tours.
I did 8 days in Thailand spending ₹46,800 all-in from Mumbai — flights, visa (free), stay, food, local transport, activities, shopping, and a Thai massage every single day. Here's the exact breakdown, city by city, rupee by rupee.
This is the classic 8-day triangle route that covers three completely different sides of Thailand. Most experienced backpackers call it the best value route in all of Southeast Asia.
| From City | Best Airline | Return Price | Best Booking Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mumbai → Bangkok Best Route | IndiGo / Air Asia | ₹9,000–14,000 | 6–8 weeks ahead |
| Delhi → Bangkok | IndiGo / Thai AirAsia | ₹10,000–16,000 | 6–8 weeks ahead |
| Bangalore → Bangkok | IndiGo / Air Asia | ₹8,500–13,000 | 5–7 weeks ahead |
| Chennai → Bangkok | Air Asia / IndiGo | ₹7,500–12,000 | 4–6 weeks ahead |
| Kolkata → Bangkok | IndiGo / Biman | ₹7,000–11,000 | 4–6 weeks ahead |
As of November 2023, Indians get 30-day visa-free entry to Thailand — and this policy continues in 2026. No application, no fee, no paperwork before travel. Walk straight through immigration at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Arrival · Khao San Road · Chinatown Street Food
Cheapest airport transfer: Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai station (₹180, 30 mins) vs taxi (₹700–1,200). Buy a Thai SIM at airport — AIS or DTAC ₹400 for 15 days unlimited data. Check into hostel near Khao San Road.
World's most famous backpacker street. Street food everywhere — Pad Thai ₹120, mango sticky rice ₹80, grilled corn ₹40. Budget Chang beer at ₹150 vs bar price ₹300. Wander, eat, absorb Bangkok's electric energy.
15 mins tuk-tuk from Khao San (₹200 shared). Yaowarat Road at night is one of Asia's great food experiences — steamed buns, seafood, roast duck. Budget ₹300–400 for a full Chinatown dinner feast.
Grand Palace · Wat Pho · Wat Arun · Rooftop Sunset
Bangkok's crown jewel — 218-acre palace complex with the Emerald Buddha. Entry ₹1,300 (500 THB). Arrive early to beat crowds. Dress code strictly enforced — cover knees and shoulders or rent a wrap at the gate (₹50).
5 min walk from Grand Palace. Home of the 46-metre gold reclining Buddha (entry ₹260). Then get a traditional Thai massage at Wat Pho school — ₹600 for 1 hour. Cheapest and most authentic massage in Bangkok.
Take the ₹4 ferry across the Chao Phraya river. Wat Arun's porcelain mosaic spires are a photographer's dream. Entry ₹130. Climb to the upper terrace for river views. Best photos from the opposite bank at sunset.
Skip the paid Sky Bar (₹3,000 minimum spend). Magnolias Ratchadamri Sky Bar has stunning Bangkok views with no minimum spend. Or try the Lebua State Tower for photos from outside — completely free iconic Bangkok skyline shot.
Chatuchak Market · Evening Budget Flight North
8,000+ stalls across 27 acres — clothing, antiques, plants, street food, art. One of the world's largest markets. Entry free. Budget ₹500–800 for shopping + food. If not a weekend, visit Or Tor Kor fresh market instead.
Don Mueang Airport (DMK) for budget flights — not Suvarnabhumi. Take BTS + bus combination (₹150) vs taxi (₹500–700). Book Thai Lion Air or Nok Air Bangkok → Chiang Mai for ₹1,500–2,800. Flight is 1 hour 15 mins.
Doi Suthep · Old City Temples · Sunday Walking Street
Chiang Mai's most sacred temple at 1,073m. Shared songthaew (red truck) from Old City gate ₹200 return. Arrive by 7:30 AM — morning mist, monks in saffron, and views over the entire city. Entry ₹130. One of Thailand's most beautiful temples.
Chiang Mai's Old City has 30+ temples within a 1.5 sq km moat. Walk Wat Chedi Luang (free), Wat Phra Singh (₹130), Wat Chiang Man (free). All within 20 min walk. Best cheap lunch: Huen Phen restaurant — khao soi (Northern Thai curry noodle soup) ₹150.
Sunday: Wualai Road Walking Street — 1km of local crafts, food, live music every Sunday 4–10 PM. Free entry. Budget ₹300–500 for souvenirs and dinner. Other days: Night Bazaar on Chang Khlan Road — open daily.
Ethical Elephant Experience · Thai Cooking Class · Nimman Cafes
Book Elephant Nature Park or Ran-Tong — ethical sanctuaries where elephants roam free (NOT riding). Half-day program ₹2,800–3,500 includes transport, food prep, feeding and bathing. This is the most life-changing experience in Thailand. Book 2–3 days ahead online.
Learn to make Pad Thai, Green Curry, Tom Kha. Thai Farm Cooking School or Baan Thai Cookery — ₹1,800–2,200 including market visit + 5 dishes. Best skill to take home from Thailand.
Fly to Krabi · Railay Beach · Sunset Viewpoint Hike
Book Thai AirAsia or Thai Lion Air — ₹2,000–3,500. Flight 1hr 45mins. Alternatively fly to Phuket (cheaper) and take a 2-hr bus to Krabi for ₹400.
Only accessible by longtail boat from Ao Nang (₹200 one way, 15 mins). Railay is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs — no roads, no motorbikes, pure paradise. Phra Nang Cave Beach is 15 min walk from Railay and has a sacred shrine inside a sea cave.
30-min steep hike up from Railay East leads to a viewpoint overlooking both Railay beaches with the limestone karsts in silhouette. Free. Completely worth the climb. Best sunset photo opportunity in all of Krabi.
4-Island Snorkeling Tour · Koh Poda · Chicken Island · Night Market
Shared longtail boat tour — Koh Poda, Tup Island, Chicken Island, Koh Mo. Includes snorkeling equipment, lunch, and guide. Book at Ao Nang beach directly for ₹1,200–1,600 per person (skip online agencies — 40% cheaper at pier). Full day 9 AM–5 PM.
Ao Nang's night market has excellent cheap seafood — grilled fish, tiger prawns, papaya salad. Budget ₹400–600 for a full seafood dinner. Get one last Thai massage (₹500 for 1 hr) and soak up your final Krabi night.
Final Sunrise · Cheap Breakfast · Airport Transfer · Home
One final beach walk at sunrise — Ao Nang at 6:30 AM is quiet, golden, and perfect. Cheap breakfast at a local Thai stall: Khao tom (rice soup) + cha yen (Thai iced tea) = ₹100. Pack up and head to Krabi Airport.
Most return flights go Krabi/Phuket → Bangkok → India. Book as a through-ticket on Air Asia or IndiGo for best price. Alternatively, book Phuket → India directly on certain dates — check Google Flights for Phuket routes.

Thailand flights from India are cheapest mid-week. Tuesday and Wednesday departures save ₹2,000–4,000 vs Friday/Saturday flights on the same route.
Bangkok hostels (₹600–900 dorm) are social and well-located. For Chiang Mai and Krabi, budget guesthouses (₹900–1,200 private room) beat hostels on value — more private, quieter, better sleep.
เจ (Jay) means vegan/vegetarian in Thai. Say it at any stall and they'll remake the dish without meat or fish sauce. Thailand is incredibly accommodating for Indian vegetarians once you know this word.
Bangkok taxis often claim the meter is broken or take long routes. BTS Skytrain covers all tourist areas for ₹80–200 per trip vs taxis ₹400–800. Buy a rabbit card for unlimited tap-and-go convenience.
4-Island tours, elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes cost 30–50% more on Viator or GetYourGuide. Walk to the pier, the sanctuary gate, or the cooking school — same experience, much lower price.
Skip hotel spas (₹1,500–2,500/hr). Street-level Thai massage shops charge ₹400–600/hr for the exact same quality. Budget ₹500/day — the best daily spend in Thailand.
Super Rich Exchange (green sign) at Bangkok airports and city give the best THB rates — 5–8% better than hotel or airport bank rates. Exchange ₹20,000–25,000 at once for the best rate.
AIS Tourist SIM — ₹400 for 15 days unlimited 4G data + calls. Pick it up at the airport counter immediately after landing. Don't use Indian roaming (₹800–1,200/day) or buy at a city shop.
I landed in Bangkok at midnight. The heat hit me the moment I stepped out of the airport — thick, warm, fragrant. By 1 AM I was eating pad kra pao (Thai basil chicken) at a 24-hour street stall near Khao San Road for ₹130, sitting next to a Swedish backpacker and a Thai grandmother watching a soap opera on her phone. That's Bangkok in 30 seconds.
The Grand Palace on Day 2 stopped me cold. I've been to the Vatican, I've seen the Taj Mahal — but walking through those gold spires in the Bangkok morning heat, there's a visual intensity to Thai temple architecture that nothing prepares you for. The Emerald Buddha is surprisingly small, but the reverence in the room around it is enormous.
The elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai on Day 5 was the moment I understood why people call Thailand life-changing. Feeding a 40-year-old elephant named Dok Ngern — watching her take bananas from my hand with a trunk that moved with more gentleness than I expected — is one of those experiences you carry home permanently. It cost ₹3,200. It was worth ₹1,00,000.
Railay Beach from the water on the longtail boat — limestone karsts rising straight out of the Andaman Sea, impossibly green and vertical, with a crescent of white sand — looked so much like a screensaver that I genuinely questioned if it was real.
I spent ₹49,800 over 8 days in Thailand. Bangkok's controlled chaos, Chiang Mai's mountain calm, Krabi's island perfection — each city was a different country and a different version of myself. Thailand under ₹50,000 is not budget travel. It's the best value travel experience on the planet.
