Zanskar Valley: The Last Hidden Kingdom in Ladakh You Need to Visit in 2026

I’d done Leh-Ladakh twice before — Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La, the works. I thought I’d seen what Ladakh had to offer. Then a guesthouse owner in Leh mentioned Zanskar almost as an afterthought — “if you have time, go there, it’s a different world.” I had no idea how literally true that would be.

The drive from Kargil over Pensi La was unlike anything I’d experienced in the Himalayas. That night in Padum, lying on a homestay rooftop looking at a sky so full of stars it looked artificial, I understood why people who’ve done Zanskar talk about it differently than they talk about the rest of Ladakh. Pangong is beautiful. Zanskar is humbling. One you photograph. The other changes how you think about distance, isolation, and what it means for a place to still be undiscovered in 2026.
